"Granite Capital of the World"
Home of Richard B. Russell Hydroelectric Dam
and Recreational Reservoir
There are thirty-seven granite quarries in the Elberton
area, many of them 150 feet deep or more, from which the famed Elberton blue-gray granite
is quarried.
The Elberton Granite Museum and Exhibit, operated by the Elberton Granite Association,
Inc., is one of Northeast Georgia's newest tourist attractions. The museum, which opened
in 1981, contains historical exhibits, artifacts, educational displays and materials
depicting current and past events in the rich heritage of the Elberton Granite Industry.
The museum is open daily from 2 until 5 p.m., including Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
State Highway 72 crosses the
Savannah River into South Carolina near the site of the Richard B. Russell Dam.
